How to Field Dress a Whitetail Deer:
In this day in age with chronic wasting disease and lyme disease, all hunters should wear gloves. Field dressing whitetail deer is a relatively easy task. The only items you will need are a sharp knife and a stomach that is not easily upset. For those that do not like the feel of warm blood or internal body parts, I recommend you wear a pair of surgical gloves. Listed below are some very basic steps and pictures to aid you in completing the field dressing process.

How to Field Dress a Whitetail Deer

You got your shot, took it and knocked down your deer. Great! However, your deer-hunting job is far from complete until your deer is in the freezer. We will show you step by step how to Field Dress, Skin and Butcher your deer.

Be very careful when approaching your buck or doe when you fined the downed deer. But is it down for good? Approach the animal from behind, with your gun or bow poised for a follow-up shot.

Most states and Canadian provinces require you to tag a buck on the spot. A few people attach a tag to a deer's ear. Many hunters tie or tape it around an antler or leg.
Carry a sharp fixed or folding-blade knife and a sharpening stone or steel. You might cut through the thin hide just below the joint of a deer's hind leg and attach your tag there.

Roll a buck onto its back with its head pointed uphill if possible.

The first cuts: remove a buck's penis and scrotum.

Make a deep circular cut around a deer's rectum being very careful not to cut into the rectum.

Some hunters like pull the out the rectum and then tie it off with string or rope.

Working from the rear up to the brisket, begin to cut open the deer cavity.

Lets say you're right-handed. then use your left hand to guide the blade and hold down the paunch, intestines and organs so you don't pierce them. Be careful not to clip your fingers!

Be Very Carefully remove a deer's bladder. Don't let any urine spill in the deer cavity

Reach inside the lower body cavity, pull out the rectum and remove it from the deer cavity

Roll the deer onto one side. Lift the ribcage and sever the tissue that holds the organs and intestines in place in the cavity of the deer.

Roll the buck onto the other side and do the same thing.

Reach inside the body cavity and around the paunch and make sure all the tissue is cut away from the backbone in the cavity of the deer.

Pull out all the Cavity  innards. Saving the liver and heart if you like placing them in a plastic bag .

Reach as far as possible up into the cavity under the brisket...

and cut out and remove the windpipe from the deer cavity.

The inside of your buck should look very neat and very clean like this! On the drag out of the woods try not to soil the body cavity with dirt and leaves, At camp hang the deer and checking the cavity one more time to be sure the cavity is still clean. use a small stick to hold open the deer cavity to help the deer meat cool.
