Families Make a Difference
Behind every Special Olympics athlete there is a
network of family and friends. Families play an integral role in
the success of the overall Special Olympics organization. Family
members make it possible for the athletes to be a part of Special
Olympics by encouraging them in their training efforts and sharing
their achievements.
A place to belong
Over and over, parents tell us of the isolation
they felt when they learned that their child had mental
retardation. Then they tell us how Special Olympics delivered hope
and a place to belong. Family members can gain from Special
Olympics. They find a support network of people with similar
concerns and life experiences, help finding resources; and a place
of acceptance and respect. Through Special Olympics, families find
a community that joins in celebrating their athletes' achievements
and believes in a bright future for them.
Join the Special Olympics Michigan Family
Many family members also choose to join in as
volunteers and leaders-helping their child or relative, as well as
other athletes, enjoy and benefit from sports activities.

Monroe Michigan
supporters make it happen
The people and businesses of Monroe Michigan make our
Special Olympics program a reality. We do not receive funds from the
state or federal government, United Way, or the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.
Foundation.
Every donation counts
Whether you sponsor a state event, donate a
basketball, or mail in $50, you are making a difference for our
athletes. The athletes do not pay to participate in the program, so each
dollar goes toward the equipment, uniforms, transportation, and facility
fees they need.
Many businesses find that serving as a Monroe Michigan
sponsor is a unique way to benefit their communities. They are invited
to volunteer as well as make a donation. Their commitment benefits the
community, and they often see improvements in employee morale, company
reputation, and even profits.
Funds are managed carefully
Special Olympics of Monroe Michigan appreciates the
many generous donors to our program, and we carefully manage those funds
to provide the greatest benefit to the athlete. In national polls, the
general public has selected Special Olympics as a "best run charity" and
"most credible charity." Of every dollar you give, 100% goes directly to
our Monroe County sports programs.
