SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR 2005 SCTP TRAP TEAMS:

Dundee Sportsman’s Club SCTP Team Trap Shoot

Michigan State SCTP Senior Novice Division Championship.

The youth shooting team from the Dundee Sportsman’s Club earned a 1st Place championship this year at the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) State Championships held July 9th at Mason, Michigan.  The team includes Captain:  James Jones of Livonia, Matthew Nartker,

Levi Siegel of Dundee, and Andrew Grow of Monroe, Travis Castle of Petersburg and reservist, Kyle Stefko from Monroe.  The boys are coached by the Dundee Sportsman’s Club president,

Ted Norris.

The Scholastic Clay Target Program's (SCTP) was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and offers young men and women in grades 12 and under the opportunity to compete as a team in trap, skeet and sporting clays for state and national championships as well as college scholarship money. It's all designed to instill in participants safe firearms handling, commitment, responsibility, leadership and teamwork. Nearly 40 states and 6,000 youths take part in SCTP. The program has seen phenomenal growth in 2005. Nationally, in 2004, trapshooting, the program had more than 5,500 participants and hoping for over 6,000 in 2005.

This years’ state shoot was well represented with 44 teams from around the state.  The Dundee team scored 903 out of a possible 1,000 in the Senior Novice Division which earned them their State Championship.  Winning this championship, they received an invitation to the Nationals in Vandalia, Ohio on August 9, 2005.

Many of our senior members and trap shooters have worked with the boys and supported them and the program since it began at DSC three years ago.  Many of the boys have been shooting trap for years, some their whole life.  A few have only been shooting for a short time. The support and help from our senior shooters has assisted these short-timers in becoming the trap shooters they are today.  "They shot very well at Mason, they had a great time and that’s all that matters.  I am very proud of each and everyone one of them" said Coach Norris.

Cabela’s Outfitters is working with many youth programs around the country and has been a great supporter of the SCTP here in Dundee.  On August 7th each of the team members were honored at a presentation by Cabela’s for a job well done.  Each young man received a sports bag with a shooting vest embroidered with the Dundee Sportsman’s Club logo with their first name, a ball cap and a pair of shooting glasses.

54 senior novice teams from around the U.S. made to the National shoot in Vandalia, Ohio on August 9th.  It was 95 scorching degrees outside with no cloud cover in sight.  Everyone was very hot, very excited and optimistic, hoping that they all would do well despite the heat.  The DSC team was shooting their first 100 birds in seventh position on house 6 which finally came about at 10:30am that morning. The boys shot and did very well despite the heat but we found out later that they finished in 12th position at mid point of the competition. They again got to shoot their final 100 birds at 2:00pm that afternoon which completed their day with the very same score that they finished with at the state championship in Mason.  Their score for the day was 903 out of 1000 birds.  This was good enough to place them in a finished position of 18th out of 54 teams from around the country.  The Dundee Sportsman’s Club members are very proud of our young men and what they accomplished this year and are looking forward in working with everyone again next year.

Ted Norris.
